Company Description

Nucor continues to electrify the steel industry with a simple concept: The minimill is mighty. At its various minimills, Nucor produces about 15 million tons of steel annually, including hot- and cold-rolled steel, steel joists, and metal buildings. North America's largest recycler of scrap metal, Nucor produces steel by melting scrap in electric arc furnaces. Most of its products are sold to steel service centers, manufacturers, and fabricators. Subsidiaries such as Vulcraft -- one of the US's largest producers of steel joists, girders, and decking -- use the balance of the steel. The company has grown mainly through acquisition since 2006, including spending $1 billion to buy The David J. Joseph Company.

Overview

The US fabricated metal product manufacturing industry includes about 55,000 companies with about $295 billion in combined annual revenue. Major companies in specialty segments include Ball Corporation, Flowserve, Mueller Industries, Snap-On, and The Timken Company. Because of the special manufacturing processes involved for individual parts, most companies make a limited range of products. The industry as a whole is fragmented: the largest 50 companies account for about 20 percent of revenue. But concentration can be high in industry segments such as boiler, cutlery, metal can, and spring manufacturing.

        Competitive Landscape Brief

Demand depends primarily on the level of construction activity, particularly nonresidential. The profitability of individual companies depends on manufacturing efficiency and effective supply management. Large companies have economies of scale in purchasing materials and equipment. Smaller producers compete by focusing on specialized product offerings and responsive customer service to local markets. Producers of architectural and structural metals compete with producers of other building materials, primarily wood, for construction-related business.
