The Russians launched Sputnik in 1957; it was only a year later that Lockheed Martin launched the world's first communications satellite. Today, Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems still makes telecommunications, scientific, and environmental satellites. Its satellites are used for direct broadcast, broadband, fixed satellite, and mobile applications.
