Company Description

Javo puts the S-Q-U-E-E-Z-E on coffee. Javo Beverage Company makes and markets coffee and tea concentrates, drink mixes, iced and hot ready-to-drink beverages, and flavor and dispenser systems. Its national and international customers do business in the retail, health care, oil, food and beverage manufacturing, and food service industries. Of note is Javo's line of "bag-in-a-box" products that allows restaurants, hotels, and hospitals to offer fresh-tasting coffee without having to do any actual brewing. In May 2011 Javo emerged from Chapter 11 -- after four months in bankruptcy -- as a private company; it is majority owned by Coffee Holdings, an affiliate of Falconhead Capital.

How much business has the company lost due to retailers buying directly from manufacturers?

Big retailers like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Costco buy much of their merchandise directly from manufacturers, bypassing distributors. Because they buy in large quantity and operate their own warehouse systems, these retailers don't need distributors.

        Competitive Landscape Brief

Consumer taste and population growth drive demand in the consumer sector, while economic growth of businesses, like restaurants and hotels, drives demand in the commercial sector. The profitability of individual companies depends on effectively managing raw ingredient costs, efficient operations, and effective marketing. Large companies have scale advantages in purchasing, distribution, manufacturing, and marketing. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialized products or serving a local market. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is about $600,000. Imports of roasted coffee and tea are 20 percent of the US market; exports are about 10 percent of US production. Part of the international export market is instant coffee. The US is the world’s largest importer of green coffee beans because, with the exception of Hawaii and Puerto Rico, the US climate can't support coffee trees and tea plants. Coffee and tea manufacturers face intense competition from other beverage companies, especially soft drink, bottled water, and juice manufacturers. The US is the largest coffee consumer in the world.
