Company Description

William Schoen, chairman of Health Management Associates (HMA), once described his company as the "Wal-Mart of the hospital business" because, like Sam Walton's empire, HMA thrives in small-town America. The company operates a network of some 66 hospitals in 15 mainly southern states (although it also has facilities in Washington and Pennsylvania). Combined, the facilities have about 10,400 beds. HMA's hospitals provide general medical and surgical care, along with outpatient and emergency room services and specialty care in some areas such as cancer care and obstetrics. It also operates an increasing number of health clinics and outpatient surgery centers.

          Competitive Landscape Brief

Regional economic activity drives demand, because most graphic design firms are small and work locally. The profitability of individual companies depends on accurate bidding, timely delivery of projects, and a steady volume of work. Large companies have advantages in marketing and sales, breadth of services, delivery of complex projects, and supporting ongoing contracts. Small companies can compete effectively by responding quicker, adopting new trends, and specializing by services or markets. The industry is labor-intensive: average annual revenue per employee is less than $120,000. Customers and prospects become competitors when they bring design services in-house rather than hire graphic design firms. Freelance designers may be competitors or contract labor.
