Company Description

No paper tiger, Catalyst Paper is a top North American producer of mechanical printing paper, and the region's only paper producer of the coated mechanical and soft-calendered varieties. Specialty papers, its core line, newsprint, and pulp are produced at four mills, hosting capacity for 1.9 million tons of paper annually. Papers are sold to retailers, publishers, and commercial printers for use in phone directories, catalogs, newspapers, as well as consumer goods packaging. Pulp is sold to producers of tissue and other papers. Catalyst serves the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. However, citing rising costs and decreased demand, the company filed for bankruptcy reorganization in early 2012.

      Competitive Landscape Brief

Demand is driven by general commercial activity and population growth. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations, as products are sold mainly based on price. Big companies have advantages in distribution and can supply large customers. There are few economies of scale in manufacturing; large and small producers operate the same kinds of plants -- large producers just have more of them. Small companies can compete successfully by making specialty products or serving a small geographical market. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is about $400,000, although the figure varies by product segment.
