The spry 330-year-old Okaya & Co. holds its own against its bigger, younger brothers, Japan's mammoth sogo shosha (general trading companies). Founded as a hardware shop in 1669 in the Teppocho district of Nagoya, Okaya's trading interests include iron and steel, nonferrous metals, chemicals, building materials, electronics, machinery, food products, and more. The company has around 30 offices throughout Japan and just over 20 offices and more than 65 affiliated businesses worldwide. Okaya has been strengthening its overseas businesses by establishing joint ventures and affiliates.
