Recent Developments

NBA, NHL Making Up for Lost Time - At present, TV ratings are dominated by MLB and the NFL. However, if recent gains are any indication, professional hockey (NHL) and the NBA are increasing in popularity. Ratings are up for the NHL and NBA on major networks this season, with year-over-year increases for the NBA playoffs of up to 31 percent, and 11 percent for regular season NHL games. Higher ratings are one indicator of a league's popularity, which can translate to higher ticket and merchandise sales.

Partnership to Enhance Soccer's Reach - Soccer, which has yet to draw the same number of fans to its US professional league, MLS, as it has in Europe and many other parts of the world, continues to work to penetrate the US market. The latest attempt is by Spain's FC Barcelona club, which will partner with MLS to expand its name and marketability within the US. The partnership will include merchandising rights and exhibition games in the US.

Latest Steroid Scandal Still Unfolding in NFL - Steroids have been a hot topic for professional sports media and fans the past few years, and the latest controversy may just be getting started. Before his apparent suicide, convicted steroids dealer David Jacobs had been meeting with NFL officials about players he provided steroids to prior to his conviction, Sports Illustrated reports. While the NFL has yet to name names, some players' attorneys have already denied allegations of their involvement with steroids.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven by consumer income and corporate entertainment spending. The profitability of individual teams depends on achieving high fan attendance and a large TV audience, both of which are enhanced by effective marketing and competitive play. Teams in large metropolitan areas have advantages in the population base and TV audience they can draw on, though they may face competition from other teams. Teams in smaller markets, along with less popular sports and minor league teams, can compete by building fan loyalty through local marketing promotions and an appeal to civic pride. Average annual revenue per worker across all sports teams is over $325,000.
