Overview

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) has executed an AT&T-style breakup into two local carriers and a long-distance provider -- but unlike Ma Bell's gang, this family is sticking together. The world's #1 telecommunications company, NTT is a holding company for regional local phone companies NTT East and NTT West, which enjoy de facto monopolies in their markets; and long-distance carrier NTT Communications, which faces growing competition. NTT also operates a leading ISP and it owns 63% of Japan's dominant cellular carrier, NTT DoCoMo. The company also has holdings throughout the Pacific Rim and in the US. NTT remains 34%-owned by the state.
