NRG Energy, a leading power producer with an operational generating capacity of 22,880 MW, is moving onward and upward as an independent company. NRG has power plants primarily in North America, but also in Australia, Brazil, and Germany. The company's global portfolio includes 175 generation units at 49 power plants. It also markets natural gas, oil, and other commodities and invests in district heating and cooling and alternative energy projects. In 2008, in a move to expand its geographic reach, Exelon made a $6.2 billion bid to acquire NRG, but NRG rebuffed the offer as inadequate.
