Norilsk Nickel Company Description
When it comes to mining, Norilsk Nickel is a real Russian bear. By its own estimate, the company is the largest producer of nickel and palladium, and it has a sizable stake in cobalt and platinum production worldwide. The company also became Russia's largest gold producer when it acquired fellow Russian miner Polus in 2002, though it spun of those assets in 2006. Other business ventures include energy supply, telecommunications, and transportation. Norilsk Nickel holds a controlling stake in US-based platinum producer Stillwater Mining. Investor Vladimir Potanin owns 30% of the company, and another investor, Michael Prokhorov, sold his own 25% stake to Russian aluminum giant RUSAL in 2008.
