NHK Company Description

Joe Six-Sapporo tuned into public broadcasting to watch baseball? Only in the Land of the Rising Sun. As Japan's sole public broadcaster, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK, also called Japan Broadcasting Corporation) airs cultural fare, news, sports, entertainment, and educational programming. NHK provides two terrestrial channels (Educational TV and General TV), three radio channels, and three satellite channels, including high-definition TV. The broadcaster is independent of government funding, thanks to a law that requires every Japanese household or office with a TV to pay a fee; these fees provide more than 95% of NHK's revenues.
