Recent Developments

MLB Looks to Set Attendance Record - MLB hopes to attract more than 80 million in total attendance in the 2008 season, setting its fifth-straight attendance record. Early projections are for total baseball attendance to be between 81 and 83 million. Despite an economic downturn, several clubs report record sales, led by smaller ticket packages, such as 10 or 20 games. Some big market clubs, such as the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers, have special promotions to help increase attendance.

NBA, NCAA Consider Youth Partnership - The NBA and NCAA are considering an amateur basketball partnership that may include sanctioned tournaments, player and coach development, and a year-round training program for high school players. The two organizations have discussed reforming amateur basketball since 2006, but historically have different agendas. Both the NBA Commissioner and the NCAA President note their organizational commonalities about basketball development and the opportunities that the two organizations share.

Major League Soccer Adds Philadelphia Team - Major League Soccer's (MLS) latest expansion team will be in Philadelphia. Philadelphia joins Seattle as expansion teams that will bring the MLS team total to 16. The Philadelphia franchise will play in suburban Chester, which will build a $115 million waterfront stadium as part of a broader development along the Delaware River. The stadium is expected to be completed in 2010.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven by consumer income and corporate entertainment spending. The profitability of individual teams depends on achieving high fan attendance and a large TV audience, both of which are enhanced by effective marketing and competitive play. Teams in large metropolitan areas have advantages in the population base and TV audience they can draw on, though they may face competition from other teams. Teams in smaller markets, along with less popular sports and minor league teams, can compete by building fan loyalty through local marketing promotions and an appeal to civic pride.  Average annual revenue per worker across all sports teams is over $325,000.
