Nektar Therapeutics Company Description

Nektar Therapeutics has long touted the health benefits of inhaling. The firm developed a non-invasive inhaled delivery system for drugs that treat pulmonary diseases or that require systemic distribution. Pfizer's Exubera (inhaled insulin) used the technology, until the drug giant stopped selling it in 2007 because of disappointing sales. Following that blow, Nektar decided to focus on its other proprietary and partnered programs, including drugs using PEGylation technology, which enhances the performance of existing drugs by reducing immune response to allow for longer-term treatment. In 2008 Nektar opted to sell most of its pulmonary delivery business to Novartis.
