National Rural Utilities Cooperative Company Description

Cooperation may work wonders on Sesame Street, but in the real world it takes money to pay the power bill. The National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation, or NRUCFC provides financing for electrical and telephone projects throughout the US. Owned by its more than 1,500 members, most of which are electric utility and telecommunications systems, the NRUCFC supplements the government loans that traditionally have fueled rural electric utilities by selling commercial paper, medium-term notes, and collateral trust bonds for its loans. The NRUCFC was formed in 1969 by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, a lobby representing the nation's electric co-ops.
