National Defense University (NDU) educates US military officers through five colleges under the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's direction. An accredited graduate-level university, NDU awards master's of science degrees to students who complete studies at any of the National War College, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, or Joint Advanced Warfighting School. In 1976 the former two colleges were brought into NDU, then joined in 1981 by the Joint Forces Staff College. A year later the Information Resources Management College joined the fold. In 2002 the School for National Security Executive Education expanded its International Counter Terrorism Fellows program and became the 5th NDU school.
