National Bank of Belgium Company Description

No prizes for guessing the role of the Banque nationale de Belgique. BNB is, indeed, the central bank for Belgium, as well as a key member of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB). Founded in 1850, it performs a variety of functions aimed at maintaining stability and liquidity for Belgium's banks and financial markets, including arranging fund transfers between banks, overseeing settlement activities for securities markets, and issuing banknotes and coins. The bank's chief executive, known as its governor, is appointed by the Belgian monarch. BNB is also known by its names in Dutch (Nationale Bank van België) and English (National Bank of Belgium), each of which is abbreviated NBB.
