Mirant (pronounced MEER-uhnt) is trying to keep up its energy levels during difficult times. Once a global power player, the company is now focusing on being a top North American wholesale energy marketer. Mirant owns or leases 10,105 MW of electric generating capacity located in markets in the Mid-Atlantic (5,223 MW), Northeast (2,535 MW), and California (2,347 MW). In addition to selling the electricity it produces and buying the fuel and emissions allowances it needs to produce electricity, Mirant also buys and sells some power, fuel, and emissions allowances as part of its proprietary trading and fuel oil management activities.
