Mervyns Company Description
As a mid-market retailer Mervyn's is used to getting squeezed. The company operates about 175 midrange department stores, mostly in California, but also in Arizona, Texas, and four other western states. In addition to name-brand apparel and housewares, the stores offers goods under private labels, including Hillard & Hanson and Susie Coehlo Style. About half of Mervyn's' stores are in regional malls and cater to working moms ages 25 to 49. Founded in 1949 and once owned by discounter Target, Mervyn's is owned by buyout firm Sun Capital Partners. Reeling from a downturn in consumer spending and a big squeeze from its lenders and vendors, Mervyn's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2008.
