" Mercadona is the #2 supermarket operator (behind Carrefour) in Spain and one of the fastest growing retailers in the world. It operates more than 1,200 stores in about 45 provinces, an online shopping site, and about 10 distribution centers across Spain. Mercadona supplies some 3 million households with food, pharmaceuticals, and personal hygiene and beauty products. Mercadona is looking to expand beyond Spain and hopes to acquire a supermarket chain in France, Italy, Morocco, or Portugal. Founded in 1977 by Francisco Roig, the company remains owned and operated by his children.
