" Mercadona S.A. is the #2 supermarket operator (behind Carrefour) in Spain and one of the fastest growing retailers in the world. It operates more than 1,200 stores in about 45 provinces, runs eight distribution centers across Spain, and works with more than 2,000 suppliers. Its stores supply 3 million households with food, pharmaceuticals, personal hygiene, and beauty products. The Spanish supermarket operator also sells groceries online. Mercadona is looking to expand beyond Spain; it hopes to acquire a supermarket chain in France, Italy, Morocco, or Portugal by 2010.
