Can heart alone sustain a business? MedCath has learned that despite the best intentions, no, heart alone is not enough. The company, founder of the first stand-alone heart hospital in the US, owns and manages medical facilities specializing in cardiology and cardiovascular services, mostly in the Southwest. Its two hospitals and cardiac diagnostic and therapeutic facilities house some 160 beds. MedCath shares ownership of its hospitals (which are licensed as general acute care) with local physicians. MedCath also provides physician practice management services to heart specialists. However, the company is selling off its assets due to financial difficulties.
