Recent Developments

Staff and Budget Cuts Hit Movie Industry - Continuing US economic weakness is leading to staff and budget cuts in the motion picture production and distribution industry. Film studio Lionsgate in late 2008 announced plans to lay off 8 percent of its staff. Paramount Pictures cut 60 jobs at its Paramount Vintage division earlier in the year and turned it into a label within the company rather than a stand-alone operation.

First Conviction Made from Canadian Movie Piracy Law - A Calgary man was convicted in November 2008 after pleading guilty to the unauthorized recording of the movie Sweeney Todd in a movie theater. Richard Lissaman is believed to be the first person convicted in Canada under movie pirating legislation passed in 2007. Lissaman was fined about $1,500 and banned from movie theaters for a year.

Tennessee Incentive Program Features Cash Rebates - Tennessee officials hope to increase film production in the state with a cash incentive package aimed at movie makers. Instead of the tax credits typical of incentive packages offered by other states, the Tennessee program features cash rebates, according to Variety magazine. The incentive package, which helped the state land three films in 2008, is designed to keep Tennessee competitive with other states vying for film business, according to the Tennessee Film Commission.

Competitive Landscape

Consumer spending drives demand. The profitability of individual companies depends on creativity, marketing, and distribution. Large companies often have the advantages of long-term contracts with key actors and directors, a permanent staff of technical employees, and wide distribution networks. Small companies can compete successfully by creating marketable movies, often for niche audiences, on low budgets. Although production work is labor-intensive, the value of the product results in high average annual industry revenue of $300,000 per employee.
