Recent Developments
Legislation may Help Internet Radio Services - A bill passed by Congress may help many Internet radio services stay in business, but traditional broadcast radio stations may be negatively impacted if listeners switch to Internet radio. The Webcaster Settlement Act will allow the renegotiation of a royalty rate paid by Internet radio services to the performers and owners of recordings. Many Internet radio services say that a rate set in 2007, but never put into effect, is too high and would force them out of business.
Proposed Legislation Supports Digital Radio - Legislation introduced in Congress would ensure that key consumer electronic devices will be able to receive digital radio signals. The Radio All Digital Channel Receiver Act would mandate that devices designed to receive both Sirius XM Radio service and terrestrial radio be able to receive digital radio as well. Experts say that the legislation would benefit radio broadcasting companies investing in digital broadcasting technology.
Arbitron Sued Over Rating System - The office of New York's attorney general has filed a lawsuit against media ratings company Arbitron. The lawsuit alleges that Arbitron is deceptively claiming that its Portable People Meter system of measuring radio audiences is valid, fair, and representative of diverse radio markets. Radio broadcast companies using Arbitron ratings data to attract advertisers and set ad rates may be negatively impacted if the accuracy of the data is questioned.
Competitive Landscape
Business advertising and consumer demographics drive demand. The profitability of individual companies depends on advertisement volume, programming mix, and efficient operations. Large companies have advantages of market dominance, often owning the only radio stations in a geography. Small companies can compete effectively with special programming or broadcasters who attract large audiences. Average annual revenue per worker is $140,000.
