Kindred Healthcare is one of the largest long-term health care providers in the US. Kindred operates some 230 nursing homes and more than 80 long-term acute care hospitals located in about 35 states. Its facilities have a combined capacity of about 35,000 beds. The company owns some of its facilities, but operates most of them under lease agreements with Ventas and other third parties. Kindred also operates a contract rehabilitation therapy business, which serves its own and other long-term care facilities, through its Peoplefirst Rehabilitation division.
