Power and Associates (best known for its car ratings) awards badges of excellence in dozens of categories based on yearly customer satisfaction surveys. Its studies are independently financed and then sold for use in marketing. Only top-rated performers are allowed to license the use of the awards. The company also provides its satisfaction ratings for businesses in the financial, home building, and travel industries. In addition to surveys, J.D. Power offers forecasting and other market research services. The company was founded in 1968 by its namesake, James D. Power, III. In 2005, the research firm was acquired by publisher McGraw-Hill.
