It also has assets in China and produces oil from a field southeast of Beijing. In 2007 the company had net proved reserves of 2.4 million barrels of oil and 334 million cu. ft. of gas. Ivanhoe Energy has licensed the Syntroleum gas-to-liquids process to convert natural gas to synthetic oil. In addition, upgrading heavy oil is a major part of the company's growth strategy. Deputy chairman Robert Friedland owns 20.5% of Ivanhoe Energy.
