Overview
Inmarsat (from its original name, International Marine Satellite Communications Organization) operates a geostationary earth orbit satellite network. The first organization to make the transition from intergovernmental body (founded in 1979) to private company (registered in 1999), it went public in 2005. The Inmarsat system is used primarily by maritime, aeronautical, and fleet industries in North America and Europe to facilitate global communications. Inmarsat's 11 geostationary satellites enable mobile voice and broadband data services supporting safety communications, as well as e-mail, internet, VPN, and videoconferencing. The company sells its service through a global network of distribution partners.
