Overview
For Infineon Technologies, memories of the volatile memory device market were starting to fade. In 2006 the German chip maker spun off its Memory Products unit as a stand-alone business, Qimonda. The vagaries of the DRAM chip market convinced Infineon to focus on more stable product fields. The company, which vies with STMicroelectronics to be Europe's #1 chip producer, makes semiconductors for myriad automotive, computing, communications, and industrial applications. Former parent Siemens remains one of Infineon's top customers. Asia/Pacific has overtaken Europe as Infineon's biggest geographic market, while North America has also grown in size and importance.
