Companies in this industry provide accident, sickness, disability, and other specialty or supplemental health insurance policies to businesses and individual consumers. These companies underwrite, assign premiums, and assume risk for medical expenses and income losses resulting from accidents, injuries, and illnesses. Other types of health insurance policies (such as dental, vision, and hospitalization insurance; comprehensive health care plans; and HMO/PPO managed care organizations) are not included in this industry.
