Companies in this industry provide asset management products and services to individual investors (as opposed to businesses, which are known as institutional investors). Asset managers select financial instruments (stocks, bonds, or funds), devise financial plans, and monitor the investment's performance. These companies also act as portfolio managers -- they make investment decisions (as opposed to provide investment advice) and work on a fee or commission basis.
