Industry Description
The US computer software development industry involves about 50,000 companies with combined annual revenue of about $220 billion. About 60 percent of industry revenues come from software publishing and the rest from custom programming. Large companies include Activision Blizzard, CA, Microsoft, Oracle, and Symantec. The packaged products segment is concentrated: the 50 largest companies generate about 70 percent of revenue. The custom programming segment is highly fragmented.
