They can bone up on either one via an Internet connection provided by Iliad, one of France's leading Internet service providers (ISPs). Serving more than 4 million subscribers, the company's Free and Alice subsidiaries offer dial-up and DSL connections; in some areas, subscribers can use Iliad's Freebox to make phone calls and receive television broadcasts via their broadband connection. Iliad also offers landline telephone services through subsidiaries One.Tel and Iliad Telecom. Other services include Web hosting and domain name registration. Deputy Chairman Xavier Niel founded the company in 1991.
