II-VI maintains a laser-like focus on focusing lasers. The company (pronounced "two-six") makes lenses, mirrors, prisms, and other optical components used to manipulate laser beams. The company's 5,000-plus clients -- drawn from the health care, industrial, military, and telecommunications equipment sectors -- employ these components in lasers for precision manufacturing, fiber-optic transmission and reception, and other applications. Through its eV Products unit, II-VI makes X-ray and gamma-ray sensors for nuclear radiation detection; subsidiary VLOC makes laser and sensing system parts and materials. The company gets more than one-third of sales outside the US.
