Recent Developments
Yahoo! Tries to Leapfrog Competitor Ad Tactics - In the competitive world of online advertising, Yahoo! plans to take the lead with a system tentatively called AMP. AMP would allow Yahoo's advertising customers to more easily target advertising to specific demographics on Yahoo's and its client sites. The result may eventually be higher ad sales; however, initially it may allow Yahoo! to establish itself as the premier ISP for targeted advertising, and attract valued advertisers from competing ISPs.
Tracking Technique Criticized - Some ISPs are following customers around the Internet, a potentially lucrative research technique consumer advocates call controversial. Deep packet inspection, the technology that makes the tracking possible, will eventually allow advertisers to target individual consumers based on the Internet sites they visit. Consumer advocates say that consumers are being monitored without their permission, and plan to pursue legislation to stop ISPs from further data collection.
Municipal WiFi Experiencing Growing Pains - Municipal WiFi projects nationwide are experiencing major difficulties as competing services' prices have fallen and many ISPs aren't willing to provide the services. One major provider, EarthLink, is getting out of the WiFi business altogether, and some municipalities are wondering what will become of their networks. The future of WiFi development in cities such as Philadelphia, Houston, and Chicago is unclear.
Competitive Landscape
Demand is driven by consumer and business demands for information. The profitability of individual companies depends heavily on efficient operations and good marketing, as most costs are fixed. Big ISPs have large economies of scale in operations, purchasing, and marketing. Small companies can compete successfully by serving small markets or providing technical expertise to customers.
