Process Diverts Latex Paint from Landfills - Unused latex paint that typically ends up in landfills can instead be used to make products ranging from kitchen tools to electronics cases. The paint is combined with recycled plastic to produce resin pellets that manufacturers can melt and form into various products. Experts say US consumers accumulate about 66 million gallons of surplus latex paint every year.
Austin Hopes to Divert Waste from Landfills - The city of Austin, Texas, plans to reduce the garbage it sends to landfills 20 percent per resident by 2012. The initiative is part of a solid waste plan intended to achieve zero waste and divert all of its landfill waste toward reuse and recycling by 2040. Austin also plans to open a single-stream recycling facility in 2008 or 2009.
Coupon Encourages TV Recycling - Waste Management (WM) and Sony Electronics are offering a $100 coupon toward a new Sony BRAVIA high-definition TV to anyone who brings a TV for recycling to a US WM eCycling Center. The coupons are part of a recycling program that's removed more than 530 tons of electronics from the wastestream, according to WM. Many experts say the switch from analog to digital TV signals in February 2009 may result in many analog TVs being disposed of in 2008.
Competitive Landscape
Demand depends on the volume of waste generated, which depends on the level of economic activity and consumer spending. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations, because the service is a commodity sold based on price. Big companies have large efficiencies of scale in operations. Small companies can compete successfully by offering specialized services or serving local markets. Annual revenue per employee is $200,000 at large companies, $125,000 at smaller ones.
