Grupo Carso Company Description

Slim equals fat assets for Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú. His sprawling conglomerate, Grupo Carso, owns more than 80% of Grupo Sanborns, which includes the Sanborns department store chain, and a majority stake in Sears Roebuck de México. Grupo Carso has interests in cigarette maker Cigatam and railroad, chemical, and mining concern Empresas Frisco. Grupo Sanborns and Grupo Carso spun off their 51% stake in troubled US computer retailer CompUSA in 2002. Ownership was transferred to two new holding companies as well as an existing wireless telecommunications firm, all owned by Slim.
