Business Challenges
CRITICAL ISSUES
Hedge Fund Investors Shrink - Poor fund performance caused by falling asset values have prompted many wealthy individual and institutional investors to shift their money to other investment vehicles. Investors may instead favor large institutional firms that can assure heightened transparency and risk management processes. Investors that continue to invest in hedge funds are seeking funds with a proven track record.
Increased Industry Regulation - As the number of funds managed by the hedge fund industry climbs, industry regulation is more likely. Although the hedge fund industry is still small compared to the mutual fund industry, the SEC and other regulators are concerned that they have little knowledge of the risks the industry may pose to US financial markets. Regulation may at first consist only of simple reporting of the amounts being managed, but industry participants fear they'll eventually be asked to reveal investment strategies.
