Overview
Great Lakes Health Plan provides health care coverage to about 170,000 Michiganders. Under contract with the state, the Medicaid HMO manages the health care of low-income individuals and families in 20 states in southern Michigan, offering coverage for medical care and vision services, as well as prescription drugs. It also provides members with free transportation to and from doctors' appointments. In 2007 the company launched an HMO health plan for dual-eligible Medicare beneficiaries (that is, Medicare recipients who are also eligible for Medicaid) in a handful of Michigan counties. Great Lakes Health Plan is a subsidiary of AmeriChoice, which is part of UnitedHealth .
