Overview
The Continental division of General Motors, GM Europe helps to keep the old country driving. GM Europe manufactures and sells its Opel, Vauxhall, Cadillac, and Chevrolet brands in more than 40 markets. Major production facilities are established in Germany, Poland, Sweden, and the UK. Strapped for cash, like its parent company which sought bankruptcy protection in June 2009, GM Europe looked to bridge financing from the German government to protect it from GM creditors. In November 2009 an agreement to sell the Opel/Vauxhall assets to car parts maker Magna International fell through. GM plans to restructure its European operations instead.
