Free trade? Fair trade, man! Founded in 1988, Global Exchange advocates for human rights and on behalf of Third World artisans and small businesses. Not only does it lobby big corporations like Starbucks to pay fairer prices to suppliers, it sells coffee beans, clothing, and other products made in underdeveloped countries through retail stores in California and Oregon, and through a Web portal. The not-for-profit venture is also in the "reality tour" business, arranging travel to countries off the beaten path, including Cuba, which has led to legal conflicts with the US government. Staff titles have included clean car campaigner, peace campaign coordinator, speakers bureau badass, and sweatshop policy analyst.
