Recent Developments

Rising Gas Prices Lead to Service Cuts - Rising gas prices are forcing some nonprofits to cut travel-related services. The Salvation Army has reduced donation pickups from once a day to twice a week in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The manager of the state-subsidized Lynx transportation system in Bangor, Maine, says that seven of about 100 volunteer drivers have left the program since May 2008 because of high fuel costs.

Rising Income at Nonprofit Hospitals Criticized - Tax breaks, investment gains, and pricing power gained through mergers are raising income dramatically at some nonprofit hospitals. Net income at the 50 largest US nonprofit hospitals increased eight-fold between 2001 and 2006, according to The Wall Street Journal. Some critics argue that the hospitals are abusing their nonprofit status. The Senate Finance Committee has threatened to introduce legislation that would force nonprofit hospitals to provide a minimum amount of charity care.

Charitable Giving Declining - Charitable giving, a key source of funding for many nonprofits, declined in first quarter 2008 compared to the same period a year earlier. A 2.1 percent increase in revenue per donor couldn't offset declines in donor numbers and overall revenue, according to Target Analytics. Donor numbers fell 4 percent and revenue, 1.8 percent.

Competitive Landscape

Organizations receive nonprofit status because their primary purpose is charitable, educational or civic in nature. The success of nonprofits often depends on efficient operations, to be able to match expenses with a changeable level of revenue. Large nonprofits are advantaged in fundraising due to better name recognition. Small nonprofits can be successful if they serve a dedicated membership or have a dependable source of revenue.
