It's not quite the Fantastic Voyage, but Given Imaging's PillCam is in the same genre. The company makes the Given System, one component of which is the PillCam, an ingestible capsule with an enclosed miniature video camera that takes photos of a patient's intestines or esophagus. As the PillCam moves through a patient's system, it transmits images to a wireless data recorder. The FDA-approved system, which also includes a computer workstation and imaging software, is a noninvasive alternative to traditional endoscopy. Given Imaging markets the system to gastroenterologists and hospitals worldwide. Discount Investment Corporation and its minority-owned subsidiary Elron Electronic own about 40% of the firm.
