Overview
Designer Gianni Versace lives on in every clingy chiffon gown or slinky pantsuit sent down the catwalk by his namesake empire, which continues to design, make, and license apparel, accessories, and other items. (Sister Donatella is creative director.) Wares are sold in more than 200 company-owned boutiques and some 1,000 other shops in 60 countries worldwide. It operates resorts with Sunland Group. Occurring almost 20 years after he unveiled his first fashion collection in 1978, founder Gianni Versace's 1997 murder put IPO plans on hold. The company has since reorganized, purged some licenses, and is cost-cutting. Versace's niece Allegra Versace Beck inherited 50% of the empire on her 18th birthday in mid-2004.
