Overview
Genmar Holdings trolls for sales by cruising the pleasure boat market with a line of luxury yachts, recreational powerboats, and fishing boats. The company builds more than 220 different boat models, ranging in size from 60-foot yachts (servants not included) to fishing skiffs. Its brands include Glastron, Ranger, and Wellcraft. Genmar markets its boats through more than 1,400 independent dealers in the US and 40 other countries. The company, which is a combination of about 13 different boat brands acquired over 25 years, is controlled by chairman Irwin Jacobs, an investor and former corporate raider. Sinking sales forced the boat-building company to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2009.
