Black gold on the deep blue brings in the green for General Maritime. A leading operator of midsized tankers, General Maritime transports crude oil, primarily in the Atlantic Basin but also in the Black Sea. The company's fleet consists of about 20 double-hull Aframax and Suezmax tankers that have an overall capacity of about 2.7 million deadweight tons (DWT). General Maritime deploys its vessels both on the spot market (voyage by voyage) and under longer-term time-charter contracts. Customers have included major oil companies such as Chevron, CITGO, Exxon Mobil, Hess, and Shell. In mid-2008, General Maritime agreed to acquire smaller rival Arlington Tankers.
