Canadian stocks close slightly higher [Xinhua News Agency]

Canada's main stock index, the S&P/ TSX Composite Index, managed to close slightly higher at 11,652.69, up 22.69 points, or 0.20 percent on Wednesday. Just like the index, the share prices of Royal Bank of Canada and Nova Scotia stayed almost unchanged.

Led by commodity producers and financial shares, Canada's main index, the S&P/TSX Composite Index closed at 11,630.00, up 117.74 points, or 1.02 percent, its highest level in 2009 on Tuesday. On the commodity front, Potash Corp of Saskatchewan, the world' s largest fertilizer producer, is advancing more than six percent after George Soros' hedge fund increased its stake.

Canadian stocks opened high on Wednesday, but pared advances in the latter part of the session as the U.S. dollar rebounded after touching a 15-month low, curbing the gains in commodities. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan led all gainers, up 1.8 percent at 106.52 Canadian dollars, followed by several big banks.
