Franciscan Health System
Overview
St. Francis himself may have hailed from Italy, but his followers look after the health of the residents of the South Puget Sound area through the Franciscan Health System. The not-for-profit system's oldest and largest hospital is St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, a 320-bed facility founded by the Sisters of St. Francis in 1891. Its other facilities include community hospitals St. Clare Hospital (in Lakewood) and St. Francis Hospital (in Federal Way), as well as a hospice program, and numerous primary and specialty care clinics. Franciscan Health System is an affiliate of Catholic Health Initiatives.
