As one of the country's largest paid subscription television providers, the company distributes cable and satellite services to households and businesses in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, among other cities. Its digital channels cover such genres as sports, movies, news, and documentaries, and are provided by international and Australian-owned media and communication companies. Established in 1995, FOXTEL is jointly owned by Consolidated Media Holdings (25%), News Corporation (25%), and Telstra Corporation (50%). Currently, Consolidated Media and News Corp. FOXTEL agreed to buy partner Austar in 2011 to expand its rural market share.
