Food Emporium Company Description
The Food Emporium operates about 30 upscale supermarkets mostly in Manhattan, but also in New York State, and Connecticut. The grocery chain is a division of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. In 2004 the regional retailer launched an online shopping service (www.thefoodemporium.com), making home delivery available to shoppers in 33 ZIP codes in Manhattan, where Internet grocer FreshDirect has met with considerable success. To better compete online, the grocery chain now offers free delivery in Manhattan with $50 purchases (with some restrictions). Westchester residents are charged between $6 (next day) and $10 (same day). Rival Gristede's Foods has also launched an online grocery shopping service.
