Overview
The Swiss have a name for diversification: Federation of Migros Cooperatives (Migros or FCM). Composed of about 10 regional cooperatives, the company owns about 20 food and beverage manufacturing operations, is the #1 retailer (ahead of Coop), and is the largest employer in Switzerland. It also operates stores in France and Germany. Migros' retail empire spans supermarkets, specialty stores, and gas stations under the Migros, Globus, and Ex Libris banners. Its business also includes banking (Migros Bank), hotels (Hotelplan), and oil (Migrol), and wholesaling of its consumer goods. Migros was founded in 1925 and transformed into a cooperative by the late consumer rights advocate Gottlieb Duttweiler.
