Eacom Timber Competition

Recent Developments
Once Useless Timber may be Salvaged - Wood that was once considered useless because it had been damaged by mountain pine beetles may be used to create newsprint. A three-year research project underway in Canada uses sensors to detect blue taint from beetle infestation and dryness in every load of wood chips. The newsprint production process can be adjusted for the drier, darker wood by injecting more bleach, heat, or water. A press designed to be gentler on weakened newsprint is also part of the process.
New Use for Forest Waste Found - A New Zealand firm says that it's patented technology to microwave forest waste into charcoal to improve soil quality. The biochar technology, developed by Carbonscape, can capture carbon dioxide and hold it for 10,000 years while also improving plant growth by putting the charcoal into topsoil. Some experts say that the technology could give forestry companies a way to offset their carbon debt in carbon cap and trade systems currently under consideration.
Analysis Method Shows Wood is Environmentally Friendly - Using a technique called environmental life cycle assessment may improve wood's image as an environmentally friendly building material, according to Responsible Materials Program of Dovetail Partners (RMPDP). Life cycle assessment is used to analyze the environmental and social impact of producing and using a material such as wood, concrete, or steel. RMPDP says that a number of materials listed as environmentally preferable by green building organizations have much greater environmental impact than nonfavored alternatives such as wood.
Competitive Landscape
Timber is harvested to make paper or wood products (mainly lumber and plywood). Residential construction and repair/remodeling account for nearly 70 percent of all lumber used in the US. Demand for paper is driven partly by the general health of the economy, which influences demand for office papers, cardboard boxes, newspapers, magazines, and tissue papers. Large logging companies can have a cost advantage over smaller ones through the use of more efficient (and more expensive) machinery, but logging is a very local activity, often without significant economies of scale.
